Oof, here’s a little contrast to my last post. Conor Oberst has somehow managed to create a bittersweet ballad begging for true love while confronted with the fact it may not exist, at least for him. This song captures the contempt you feel towards other happy lovers while only wanting ‘one desire’ great enough to warrant sonnets and dealing with that, despite your feelings, your love has proven temporary.
Because that’s all that you’ll get so you’ll have to accept
You are here and then you’re goneI’d make Conor a mix CD and tell him not to give up since even the temporary experience of life will seem to last forever, so there can be an experience of love as lasting. We seem to agree, since he resolves with contrasting sentiments to the rest of the song that lovers should be
left there to sleep
Left there to dream of their happinessbecause even if their romance does fail they deserve to be blindly happy while it lasts. There is even the glimmer of hope that for some people - their happiness does not ever end.
